| The early copper wire cable consisted of two copper wires that were insulated with rubber. To protect the copper wire from contact with the insulation, they were covered with a cotton cloth. A medium, such as tar, was used to prevent moisture from entering the copper wire cable and wax paper was inserted to separate the conductor. After being insulated with cloth, copper wire cables were covered with rubber. However, as the rubber was continually exposed to the environmental elements, it was determined that rubber deteriorated, becoming brittle and leaving the wires exposed. When the rubber and copper would make contact, there were problems. PVC later replaced rubber. |

Today, PVC is used to cover a copper
wire cable. PVC or polyvinyl chloride is
plasticized before covering the wires,
as this makes the PVC flexible or
increases its plasticity. There are many
uses of copper in cabling systems today.
Though at one point, the use of aluminum
in wiring began to take popularity, it
was quickly realized that aluminum
wiring did not work well with conductors
that were designed for copper. In
today’s building industry, it is
imperative that all electrical wire is
used as determined by the building
codes. |
