Copper Magnet Wire
The early copper wire cable consisted of two wires that were insulated with rubber. To protect the wire from contact with the insulation, they were covered with a cotton cloth. A medium, such as tar, was used to prevent moisture from entering the wire cable and wax paper was inserted to separate the conductor. After being insulated with cloth, cables were covered with rubber. However, as the rubber was continually exposed to the environmental elements, it was determined that rubber deteriorated, becoming brittle and leaving the wires exposed. When the rubber and copper would make contact, there were problems. PVC later replaced rubber.
